Jakarta, 5 February 2025 – The deployment of 5G technology is significantly enhancing the evolution of smart cities worldwide. With its high-speed, low-latency connectivity, 5G enables real-time data processing and advanced applications, leading to more efficient urban management and improved quality of life for residents.
In Granada, Spain, the ‘5G CityBrain’ project exemplifies the transformative potential of 5G in urban settings. Developed by INNOVASUR, MasOrange, and Opus RSE, this initiative integrates advanced artificial intelligence, sensors, and 5G connectivity to enhance real-time urban management. The project focuses on areas such as pollution monitoring, data security, and tourist flow analysis. Funded with over €1.3 million from the Ministry for Digital Transformation and the Recovery Plan, ‘5G CityBrain’ aims to improve urban sustainability and residents’ quality of life. Strategically placed visitor control cameras and remote emission measurement systems in Granada ensure data privacy and anonymity while providing valuable insights for city planning.
In the United States, New York City has initiated the installation of Link5G poles to bolster its smart city infrastructure. These 32-foot-tall structures provide free Wi-Fi and 5G services, replacing outdated payphones. The rollout prioritizes neighborhoods with limited internet access, aiming to bridge the digital divide. By July 2024, approximately 200 Link5G poles had been installed citywide, with plans for further expansion. This initiative enhances connectivity and supports the integration of smart technologies across the city.
Despite these advancements, some regions face challenges in 5G deployment. In the United Kingdom, for instance, connectivity issues persist due to factors such as the removal of Huawei products from the 5G network over security concerns, insufficient long-term investment, and infrastructure limitations. A 2023 Opensignal study ranked the UK’s 5G download speeds the lowest among G7 countries. Addressing these challenges is crucial to fully harness the economic and societal benefits of 5G-enabled smart cities.
